Is it possible to peer into the beyond? One group of psychologists set out to find an answer, and what they discovered led them into far stranger territory than they ever expected. We explore their reports of spirit encounters through the use of the psychomanteum, before turning to unsettling stories from remote farmhouses, outback huts and quiet rural homes where people awoke to find strange figures, towering shadowy forms or red-eyed beings standing beside their beds. From moonlight intruders to Australia’s tin shed visitors and the silent watchers of the Mallee and Nullarbor, a disturbing pattern begins to emerge: isolated places, powerless witnesses and the terrifying idea that whatever “they” are, they don’t always stay outside.
