Welcome back to MU! This week we take a look at Why Time Flies by Alan Burdick and find out that even “official” time is a negotiated average built from clocks around the world. Then we move into the story of Michel Siffre, who removed himself from daylight, clocks, calendars, and ordinary human routine, and his cave experiments reveal just how quickly the body's internal rhythms can drift when they're cut loose from the outside world.
Welcome to your Plus+ Extension, and thank you all for joining us on Plus+! Animals, along with all living things, are affected by cosmic rhythms and celestial cycles. Snails and crabs live by the tides, even in laboratories nowhere near the ocean. Cats with internal clocks that can be adjusted on command. Disappearing dogs that return without fail every Christmas. Biological clocks are nature's timing systems here to help regulate the behavior of all forms of life. From the simplest organism to man himself, and do so quite efficiently. Today we enjoy the 1970 book The Strange World of Animals and Pets by Vincent and Margaret Gaddis. Dedicated to all the pets, who rule us with an iron paw.
